 Would you be able to kill your daughter and then her husband five months later, or lie about your daughter's death to gain publicity? When we thought of the name Brittany Murphy what came to mind was Clueless and all the other timeless films she starred in. She is remembered by her big doe eyes, blonde hair, contagious smile, and overwhelming power to capture the audience through the camera lens. That was until 2009, when rumors started running through the city about her death being something more than just pneumonia and iron deficiency. (1.). Three conspiracies theories that not only ran Hollywood but the whole United States were;

  1. Did her mother kill her and her husband for money?

  2. Did the extra autopsy ordered by her father truly link her mysterious death to murder or was it just natural causes?

  3. Was Brittany's mother and husband in on her death?

There are always two sides to every story but, in Brittany's, could there be three? Her mother, her husband, and her father all have different stories to be told about her death, but only one can be the truth.

Introduction:

Character Analysis

      Brittany Murphy was an intelligent, driven young woman who loved to be in front of the camera. She started in the spotlight at fourteen and continued to shine throughout her adult years. In interviews with Brittany, you can see the way her eyes light up behind the camera lens; she brought this drawing charisma to the audience and everyone around her (Sara Belcher). She had even mentioned, “I’ve always seen myself as one of those ‘show people.’ My earliest memories are of wanting and needing to entertain people, like a gypsy traveler who goes from place to place, city to city, performing for audiences and reaching people” (Duck 1). She not only fulfilled her dream of reaching people with her acting career, but her optimistic personality and mysterious death captivated many as well.

      Many of her friends remember her as an always cheerful, caring person to be around. One of her colleagues, Cynthia Hill, described her, “She was so generous, caring, and always thinking about everybody else and I think sometimes that gets forgotten because of all the mystery surrounding her death... She loved everybody” (Miller,1). When we see her in her initial stages of acting, she always played characters that seemed upbeat, spontaneous, and caring. (1). This is somewhat reflecting how she truly was in real life. When we look at her death, that is not what we see. We see someone who was extremely ill and not caring for themselves at all. It leaves you wondering how a person who cared so much for others could care so little for herself, or how the people around her could not see her becoming worse. Her cheerful, light eyes soon became dark and heavy, and, when the questions came about her shocking death, her mother responds, "We will never know for sure... However, we do know the Los Angeles County coroner did extensive tests and found that she died of natural causes. And now she is a real living angel in heaven." (1).

       Brittany's life in front of the camera defiantly varied from the life she lived at home with her husband, Simon Monjack. At first, people described their relationship as something everyone wanted, passionate, delicate, and loving, until they started noticing it declining. She would go to set being very present and excited, uplifting everyone's mood as soon as she walked through the door, even though she was silently facing difficulties at home. Her coworkers and friends began to blame her attitude changing on her husband; Lisa Rieffel, expressed, “One day numbers were changed, no one knew where she was, could not find her. Disappeared. Simon took her away. That was it. He made sure no one could get to her.” Her life was deteriorating behind closed doors, and there was nothing she could do besides act. Act like she was fine, act like she was happy, and act like her life was perfect, as shown through the movies. Days before her death it is rumored Brittany knew her death was coming after falling extremely ill; she said while in conversation with her mother, “I'll say this because I know you can't. She said, 'Mom, I'm dying. I love you. "

       Brittany was an intelligent, charming, cheerful woman whose story of her death remains in the rumors of Hollywood today. She showed us her life and who she was through the lens of telling stories of others and embracing entertaining people. Brittany’s mother said,

   She was my baby, and we stood together throughout Brittany’s life. Now I must stand up for   her again...I want my Brittany to be remembered as the darling person she was, for the giant   [amount of] talent she showed the world (and left behind in her movie and TV appearances)     and for the friendships and loving relationships that really were part of her life. (Lauren       Kranc,1).

 Brittany, who always put others' needs ahead of her own, paid the price that fateful day, and we still do not know what horrors and corrupt decisions she endured in her final hours.

   Three main conspiracy theories are brought up when talking about Brittany Murphy's death. The main one that grabs everybody's attention is, did her mother kill her and her husband for money? There was a great deal of suspicion surrounding her mother weeks before Brittany's death, due to her mother changing things in her daughter’s will. Everything she owned now would belong to her mother if she had “mysteriously” died. Her death was ruled as her being ill and having a serve case of phenomena and iron deficiency, but as a mother wouldn’t you be concerned if your child's health was slowly declining in front of you? Brittany's mother did not seem to be concerned, which gave the public another reason to believe she knew what was coming. Brittany’s dad even showed concern about her death and her mother’s part in it, stating,

     Sharon Murphy should be interviewed and investigated, first and foremost. Let her explain why she had my daughter execute a will, leaving everything to her mother and specifically excluding Simon [her husband at the time] .... There are many unanswered questions that have to be addressed. Out of three people living together in the same house, only one survives and benefits financially.

There was a large number of details that lead her death to her own mother's hands, even her father, Mr. Bertolotti, believed she played a role in killing Brittany. If even her father was questioning her death; shouldn’t that raise a question to believe there was more going on?

     The second conspiracy theory that came to light shortly after Brittany's passing was, did the extra autopsy ordered by her father truly link her mysterious death to murder or was it really natural causes? “The lab found that Murphy’s body had dramatically elevated levels of aluminum, manganese, barium, and other metals. Its report said that she appeared to have been poisoned by “a third-party perpetrator with likely criminal intent.” (Molly). Before her dad ordered an extra autopsy, there was no reason given to test Brittany's body on any levels of toxic chemicals (1). She had no reason to have sustained such a high level of metals within her body, once again connecting her death back to something more than just an accidental death. Her father believed that her mother truly had something to do with it, and this autopsy just gave him more proof that there was something more going on. (Dries 1).

     The third and final conspiracy theory is that her husband helped her mother kill her. Many people took how close their relationship got after Brittany’s death as odd- something was very off-putting about it;

Monjack and Sharon slept in the same bed after Brittany died. Even more perplexing is a photo shoot they conducted after Brittany’s death, which featured them holding hands and staring into each other's eyes in several photos. They looked like parents grieving as opposed to a husband and his mother-in-law. (Smail).

Some found it hard to believe he did not take part in her mysterious death -- until he was found in the same situation in the months following. (Smail). He, just as well as Brittany, was found unconscious due to iron deficiency and pneumonia. With his death following hers so shortly after, it led to everyone taking him off their suspect list, just leaving her mother to blame.

     One thing all three conspiracies have in common is Brittany’s peculiar mother. We may not know exactly what happened to Brittany that day in Hollywood, but we do know who she left behind. Her husband could have been helping her mother for a while, but that still doesn’t explain his mysterious death following Brittany's. We have many unanswered questions, but one thing we know for sure is, Brittany's death will forever be a gut-wrenching mystery that lives in Hollywood.

Conspiracy Theories

Conclusion

In 2009, Brittany Murphy became the main topic of the Hollywood scene when her mysterious death came to light. Her death left rigid questions such as

    1. Did her mother kill her and her husband for money?

    2. Did the extra autopsy ordered by her father truly link her mysterious death to murder or was it just natural causes?

    3. Was Brittany's mother and husband in on her death?

Even with her father's attempts to reinvestigate, Brittany's death is still ruled as natural causes. Though her case is closed, the questions surrounding her puzzling death remain.
